Heart of Knitting

We began knitting baby hats for the local Jessop Maternity Hospital in 2017 after founder, Val Jones, got talking to a midwife in the charity shop she was managing at the time. What started as a few friends knitting together has developed into a community of 60 + people who have collectively knitted 22,000 items for charity.

There are now eight different groups across Sheffield and Rotherham knitting for maternity units at Jessop, Kingsmill (Mansfield) and Lincoln. The organisation also works with local homeless charities, Shiloh and Archer Project knitting 1,975 hats and gloves for those in need. Most recently the group has been sending items to Ukrainian refugees.

The weekly sessions are a place for people to meet new friends in a welcoming, safe environment over tea and posh biscuits! Thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund, groups are free to attend and all materials and refreshments provided.

For beginner knitters we have a 10-week basic knitting course where you will learn how to knit a baby hat. After the course you can join one of the social knitting groups and learn further skills together.
